Taken for granted

I apologize to my hundreds and hundreds (more like 3-5 at most) of followers for my 10 day absence from the blogging world- I regret to inform you that my life actually isn't very interesting. But due to the recent harassment from my own flesh and blood I thought I'd whip something up for your amusements.

After experiencing being a poor newlywed for 2 months, I've gained much wisdom in the way of "things I wish we had that now seem like a luxury". I will proceed to share these luxuries with you.

1. Washer and dryer in the house. I've had to go to the laundromat for 2 months now, I do not wish it on my worst enemy.

2. High quality cooking ingredients. Turns out the $.86 can of refried beans at Macey's isn't nearly as good as whatever my mom uses.

3. Dishwasher. Yeah you read that right, a DISHWASHER. Who doesn't put a dishwasher in an apartment these days? Are we barbarians now? My poor hands have never been more dry in my entire life. It never ends... the pile upon pile of dishes... it haunts my nightmares.

Ok real quick, super funny story. When we first moved in we stopped at Kmart to buy a few cleaning essentials. We totally forgot dishwasher soap (which turned out to be just fine, to my dismay) and I said "oh no we forgot the dishwasher soap for the... WHERE IS THE DISHWASHER??!!!??!?!!!". I felt the life go out of me. My wonderful, sweet, sympathetic husband then decides it's a good time to say "what do mean? I married one!". 10 points for style, -10,000,000 points for the woman joke.

4. Nutella. I've always been aware of how expensive it is, but my parents are doing just fine on their salary and it was a luxury we could afford in my youth. Now? I've been promised I can get it too, as long as it's on sale. I've gone to the bread aisle to check every week since we've been here and have had no luck yet. But I do believe in miracles.

5. Non-stick pans. This one can just be chalked up to laziness- we haven't hit up Bed Bath and Beyond since we got here to use our wedding gift cards so I'm stuck with all stainless steel pans. Have you ever made eggs without a non-stick pan? Not pretty folks.

6. Microwave. Also a product of laziness, but inconvenient nonetheless. Most of my dish washing problems will be solved once I can stop using 5 pots and/or pans a day reheating leftovers for lunch.

7. Home decor. My mom has an eye for the beautiful. Our home always looks well put together and the decor looks as though she doesn't try at all to get that Better Homes and Gardens Magazine look. Mine? I have all bare walls with only 2 decorations up: 1 is from Ky's mission. It's a little guy called "Tumi" and I'm pretty sure he's some sort of idol that Peruvians used to worship and sacrifice virgins to. I'm not entirely sure but... he's now on my living room wall. Across from Tumi is a picture of the Savior overlooking Jerusalem. Yeah, the irony is quite comical on that one.

8. Taking a shower without the hot water running out. Our building is comprised of 3 sections with 4 apartments each. It has not been confirmed but I'm pretty confident we share the water heater with at least one other apartment. Therefore, if I don't hurry in the shower I end up rinsing off in cool water. When it's below 32 degrees outside, that feels like melted snow coming off of the mountain.

9. Fast internet. Enough said.

10. Last but not least, my family. If you were to listen to Michael Buble's new song "Home" and took out all of the romantic, gushy stuff in it; that very well sums up how I feel. I love being married and this a fun adventure we're starting "... I'm lucky I know. But I wanna go home."

  1. This post is awesome. I loved reading about Tumi. Isn't it fun, the random mission stuff we get to put on our walls? :)

  2. It's true, it's tough living here! I can't wait for our new place with lots of amenities (basic ones, i mean we are not asking for much!). also, we bought a microwave at DI for $12...so if you really want one, you can get a good one for cheap there!
